Some clients come to me with a particular wish list and others look for inspiration during the process, by way of magazines, online, TV or in-store. Here are a few things to consider when choosing a kitchen faucet:

Installation requirements

Some faucets attach and sit directly on your sink and others require holes to be drilled directly into the countertop. For the latter, make sure you purchase your sink before installing your counter, so holes are planned according to the product’s requirements. If you are working with an existing sink, take note if your new faucet will require a one, three or four-hole installation. This is a great option if you want a simple update to your kitchen, but the choices are more limited.

Functionality

Your kitchen faucet is an important tool for both food preparation and kitchen cleanup. For this reason, I highly recommend you purchase a faucet that features a pull-down spray. Designs have really evolved in this area with retractable or flexible PVC hoses, tap or motion sensors and different spray options. These are all useful features for filling pots, cleaning tough stains and hard to reach corners.

Essa by DeltaHere’s what you should consider when selecting your handle options:

Single-handled faucets are now the most popular for kitchens. Along with the advantage of a single hole in your countertop, they are very convenient when you find yourself with just one free hand. Most are high arc to accommodate large pots and vessels.

A double-handled faucet usually requires a minimum of three holes for installation. Each handle offers a dedicated hot and cold handle which can provide a more accurate adjustment to pressure and temperature. However, you have the inconvenience of adjusting two separate knobs. If you’re going for a traditional style, this design completes it nicely.

Touchless faucets are activated by motion or touch, allowing you to easily turn the water on and off when neither hand is free or possibly contaminated (goodbye e-coli). Some brands even offer an automatic shut-off for better water conservation. When selecting this option, keep in mind that you manually have to adjust the water temperature.

The Finish

Don’t limit yourself to what you see on display. If you are drawn to a particular model in-store, keep in mind that many products come in a variety of finishes such as chrome, nickel, brushed nickel, polished brass, oil-rubbed bronze, white, black, stainless steel, as well as some fabulous vibrant colours. Your Mondeau consultant will be able to let you know what finish options are available for that model.

Last but not least, the fun part is selecting the style of your new faucet.

Styles range from clean, simple lines to a more antique look. Don’t underestimate the impact your new faucet can make in your space. From straight to curvy, modern, industrial or vintage-inspired, each will add a special touch to your current space or even inspire the rest of your kitchen design.

Either way, make it yours and enjoy the process!
